Internal Travel in Germany

Roads in Germany are generally of a fantastic quality, with well-maintained surfaces on main roads throughout the country – unfortunately the same cannot be said for smaller roads in the East of the country, which have yet to be redeveloped to match their Western counterparts. This is not the case with all roads in the East, it should be pointed out. The considerable road network covers the vast majority of the country and it is possible to get most places in the country with ease via road. A warning triangle and first aid kit are mandatory when travelling German roads. Public transport in and around the cities of Germany is of a superior quality, with buses offering efficient and reasonably priced services to regions throughout the country – many to areas that other public transport cannot cover. Trams, metro, local trains, ferries and taxis are available through Berlin, with well-integrated services and a multitude of ticketing options to cover all types of travel. Whilst there are no conductors on underground services, spot checks are frequent and fines are instant, so don’t try and dodge any fares!

Germany’s rail system is a very popular way of getting around the country – whilst it does not cover as many destinations as the extensive road services do, the comfort and inexpensive nature of travel more than make up for it. Numerous different discount tickets can be obtained, including many European standard rail passes and trains are fast and safe.Lufthansa offer countless internal flight services to any of the dozens of domestic airports scattered through the country, with certain discounts available and flight times to any destination rarely taking more than an hour.

There are many small ferry services available, taking passengers in, around and through some of Germany’s most spectacular waterways. Other than this there are a number of sail, cruise and general transport ships serving domestic ports and destinations through Germany’s rivers.
